Back to the gym
Multi-month Restrictions brought about by the COVID–19 pandemic have touched the lives of every Torontonian. One area where this can be particularly seen is the collective waistline of the city’s residents. But since officially moving into Stage 3 on July 31, allowing for the opening of gyms, among other indoor businesses and venues, the quest to bring the city’s BMI back to pre-pandemic levels has begun in earnest, with, predictably, a few limitations.
A New Workout Routine
As mandated by the province, gym-goers will have to keep a few new rules in mind while re-shaping their bodies.
- Physical distancing must be maintained, but exceptions can be made as needed for personal training.
- In weight areas, the total number of equipment users is limited to the amount able to maintain physical distancing of at least two metres, to a maximum of 50 people.
- For group activities, class size is limited to the number of participants that can maintain physical distancing of at least two metres, not exceeding 50 people.
- Equipment must be cleaned and disinfected between user sets.
- Washrooms, locker rooms, change rooms, showers or other similar amenities must be frequently cleaned and disinfected. Steam room and sauna use are not yet permitted.
Additionally, the Ontario Government strongly urges clubs to assign designated individual exercise spaces for their fitness classes and other workout areas. Many Toronto gyms have embraced the new safety protocols and gone even further. Ubiquitous Canadian chain GoodLife Fitness has provided each of its locations with an innovative portable electrostatic spraying device to ensure the utmost level of disinfection.
