Where to hang out with your dog off leash

Enjoying Toronto’s Off-Leash Options

As pandemic restrictions loosen and warm weather beckons, Toronto dogs and their human companions are steadily emerging from their condos, apartments and houses to enjoy the city’s green-spaces. Toronto/East York has 41 off-leash areas, ideal for dogs and their owners to experience a little time apart and shake off some of the awkward moments that arose from being quarantined together during April, May and June.

Here are a few of the city’s better off-leash options, however, pet owners should be aware of updated guidelines, Codes of Conduct and Bylaws drafted to keep them and their canine best friends safe.

Parks for Pets and Their Pals

Allan Gardens

This downtown centrally located park features all the amenities, including a fenced-in, off-leash area, separate area for smaller dogs weighing less than 20 pounds, and access for commercial dog walkers.

Trinity Bellwoods Park

The 14.6-hectare park on Queen Street West takes a different approach with its off-leash area. Rather than fences, the park relies on a recessed area known as “The Dog Bowl” to contain the exploits of its doggy visitors. The effect is one of openness and freedom that seems to invite dogs to roam and run.

Ramsden Park

Rosedale’s Ramsden Park is one of Toronto’s oldest and largest parks. Currently undergoing a revitalization project slated for completion this summer, the feature-rich dog area remains open, offering fenced and small dog areas, and allowing commercial dog walkers.

Stanley Park South

King Street West condo dwellers and their dogs can unwind after a long workday indoors at this park’s fenced-in, off-leash area where commercial dog walkers are welcome. The activity in this location is typically a little more subdued than other parks nearby.

Alterations Due to COVID

Dog owners should be aware that Toronto’s off-leash areas are not cleaned and disinfected. Additionally, park fountains and water bottle filling stations may be closed, so dog owners should bring their own pre-filled water bottles for themselves and their pets. Visitors are asked to practice physical distancing and avoid sharing animal toys or equipment.
